About Allison Hostutler
Teaching has always been a part of Allison Hostutler’s DNA. One of her fondest childhood memories is lining up stuffed animals in her playroom, standing at her makeshift chalkboard, and teaching her “students” their spelling words.
Allison followed her passion to Millersville University of Pennsylvania, where she graduated with a dual certification in elementary and special education, and ultimately to Rosemont College, where she earned a master’s degree in technology education.
Allison began her career as a special education teacher and worked in that capacity for 10 years, before transitioning to regular education as a second-grade teacher, a role she has enjoyed for the last 11 years and counting. For an award-winning teacher who empties her tank each day in the classroom, blogging was never on Allison’s radar.
Until her youngest son, Sebastian, was diagnosed with autism and the teacher quickly became the student.
Sebastian’s diagnosis in the fall of 2023, when he was eight years old, reframed Allison’s world, fueling within her a strong desire to understand and advocate for him and others like him. She knew that her experiences parenting a boy with autism, coupled with the insight she’s gleaned from 20-plus years in the classroom, would resonate with other families who face the challenge of raising neurodiverse children.
These feelings — the need to share, the need to let others know they are not alone on their rollercoaster of emotions — sparked the creation of Ausome Adventures with Autism.
Follow along as Allison details her journey through the complexities of parenting a child with ADHD and autism spectrum disorder. She lays bare her successes and struggles, offering advice for embracing the joys and navigating the obstacles that are myriad for parents of neurodiverse children. Through her candid storytelling, she hopes to break down the stigma of autism and to promote understanding of neurodiversity.
